Transit Visa for Bulgaria

Overview

A Transit Visa is required for non-UK passport holders residing in the UK who need to pass through Bulgaria on their way to another destination. This visa is for travellers who cross Bulgaria via road, rail, or sea as part of their journey to another country.

For airport transit, passengers who are in the international transit zone of a Bulgarian airport while waiting for a connecting flight to a third country must apply for an Airport Transit Visa if their nationality requires it.

Eligibility

To apply for a Bulgaria Transit Visa, you must:

  • Hold a valid passport and a UK residency permit (short-stay “C-type” UK visas are not accepted).
  • Be travelling through Bulgaria to another country via land, sea, or air.
  • If applying for an Airport Transit Visa, remain in the international transit zone without entering Bulgaria.
  • Have a valid visa for your final destination, if required.

Processing Time

  • Applications can be submitted up to 3 months before departure.
  • Standard processing takes at least 15 calendar days.
  • Each application is reviewed by the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and processing time may extend beyond 15 days.
  • It is recommended to book an appointment early, ensuring all documentation meets the consulate’s requirements.

Documents Required

Application Form & Photograph

  • Fully completed visa application form in English, signed by the applicant.
  • One recent passport-size colour photograph (as per consulate guidelines).
  • For minors: Both parents/guardians must sign the form.

Passport

  • Valid for at least three months beyond the planned departure from Bulgaria.
  • Must have at least two blank pages and be issued within the last 10 years.
  • Photocopies of the passport bio-data pages and any previous Bulgarian, Schengen, UK, or US visas, if applicable.

UK Residency

  • Provide a UK eVisa printout from UKVI with a valid share code.

Visa for Final Destination

  • Valid visa for the country of final destination, if applicable.

Travel Medical Insurance

  • Coverage of at least €30,000 for medical expenses, repatriation, and emergencies.
  • Must be valid for Bulgaria and all EU member states for the entire stay.

Proof of Finance

  • Bank statements for the last three months, showing financial stability.
  • Minimum funds of €50 per day of stay (at least €500 for the full trip).

For Minors (Under 18 Years)

  • Declaration of Consent signed by both parents.
  • Copy of both parents’ passports.
  • Birth certificate (original + certified translation).
  • If one parent is absent, a power of attorney or custody order is required.

Additional Information

  • Holders of service or diplomatic passports may be exempt from financial, accommodation, and travel proof.
  • Upon arrival in Bulgaria, visitors must register their stay within 48 hours at the local police station if staying in private accommodation.

Photo Specifications

  • Must be recent (within 6 months).
  • Plain white or light background.
  • Full face, neutral expression, no sunglasses or head coverings (unless for religious reasons).
  • High-quality print on photographic paper.
  • If the photo does not meet requirements, applicants may need to retake it at the visa centre.
