National Visa

Documents Required

Application Form & Photograph

• Fully completed Visa D application form in English, signed by the applicant.
• One recent passport-size colour photograph (as per consulate guidelines).

Passport

• Must be valid for at least 18 months beyond the visa issuance date.
• Must contain at least two blank pages for visa stamps.

UK Residency

• Provide a UK eVisa printout from UKVI with a valid share code.

Work Permit

• Freelance license issued by the Bulgarian Ministry of Labour and Social Policy.

Criminal Record (ACRO Certificate)

• Police Record (ACRO), certified with an apostille by the UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO).
• ACRO must be valid for 6 months from the date of issue and must still be valid at the time of residence permit application.
• If the applicant has previous convictions, a solicitor’s letter confirming full rehabilitation is required. This letter must also be apostilled by FCDO.

Proof of Accommodation in Bulgaria

• Notarial deed of property ownership OR a lease agreement.
• Notary-certified declaration from the property owner confirming consent for the applicant to register at their address in Bulgaria.

Proof of Finance

• Bank statements for the last 3 months proving financial self-sufficiency.
• Proof of regular income to sustain living expenses in Bulgaria.

Health Insurance

• Compulsory health insurance with a minimum coverage of €30,000, valid throughout Bulgaria.
• EHIC or GHIC cards are acceptable only if they cover:
  • Repatriation for medical reasons.
  • Emergency medical care.
  • Emergency hospital treatment.
  • Death/repatriation expenses.

Translation & Legalisation Requirements

• All foreign documents (such as ACRO and financial records) must be translated into Bulgarian by:
  • An accredited translator at the Bulgarian Embassy in the UK (Certified List Available Here: [Insert Link]).
  • OR a licensed translator in Bulgaria.
• Translations must then be certified by the Bulgarian Embassy or notarised in Bulgaria.

Visa Validity & Residence Permit Process

• The Long-Term Freelance Visa (Type D) is valid for 6 months with multiple entries.
• The purpose of this visa is to allow the applicant sufficient time to register with the Bulgarian Migration Office and obtain a residence permit.
• The residence permit must be renewed before expiry.
• Embassies do not issue or renew residence permits and cannot confirm the applicant’s immigration status in Bulgaria.

Photo Specifications

• Must be recent (within 6 months).
• Plain white or light background.
• Full face, neutral expression, no sunglasses or head coverings (unless for religious reasons).
• High-quality print on photographic paper.
• If the photo does not meet requirements, applicants may need to retake it at the visa centre.
